TWEED Heads Bowls Club has announced the nation's first 18-25 invitational singles event, in a move likely to make other clubs green with envy.

The popular bowler said earlier this month it would host the Silver Nugget Invitational Prestige Singles, filling a gap for the 18-25 age group and providing some challenge for up-and-coming bowls champs.

Bowls co-ordinator Paul Girdler said the event would allow potential Australian representatives to showcase their skills through tough competition.

"It's absolutely fantastic, there's no under 25 event in the country which targets them," he said.

"We will have a lot of Australian invitational players and we may go international yet.

"It's great for the game to get these talented young people in. They're our second tier Australian players invited and it'll be exciting to see our future reps play in the male and female event."

Girdler said the perception that bowls was an 'older person's game' was changing rapidly as talented young players began to dominate the green.

"There's a lot of young people in this sport, if you look at the Australian side the average age is 32 to 34 and two of their players are under 25. It's great for the game," he said.

Girdler was optimistic the Silver Nugget would help grow the club's already sizable bowls community.

"Bowls gets a major following in Tweed; we have 750 members already, it's massive," he said.

Bowls Australia's development team has a large number of young players and the event will help the players get the experience and exposure needed to succeed in top level competition.

The bowls club currently hosts the annual under 18 Junior Golden Nugget singles event and the Golden Nugget for top level players, which is televised and attracts about 1500 spectators to the club each day of play.

The Silver Nugget is also expected to draw a crowd and will start on June 19, with the finals on June 21.

A live scoreboard will available on the club's website at
