TWEED MP Geoff Provest welcomed 11 new intern doctors to the Tweed Hospital yesterday.

The graduates from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane have moved to the area as part of the Rural Preferential Program and have been undertaking an intensive orientation since their arrival.

The doctors will be assigned to work for a term in areas such as emergency, gynaecology, medicine and surgery and in the operating theatre.

Mr Provest wished the doctors the best of luck in their future work at the hospital.

"I think your profession is one of the most honourable professions, he said."

"This is a great hospital with a great bunch of staff.

"And it is a great lifestyle here."

Mr Provest also said that the new doctors would be a benefit to the community.

"I think it's indicative of their (Tweed Hospital) future planning," he said.

"The more we can train clinicians out in the field the better the wider community will be.

"I really put Tweed Hospital head and shoulders above any hospital."

Tweed Byron Health Services director of medical services Pieter Pike said Murwillumbah Hospital would also benefit, with two doctors now on staff 16 hours a day instead of eight hours.

"We are increasing the medical cover at Murwillumbah Hospital."

Intern doctor Lernik Sarkissian had moved from Sydney to the Tweed and was enjoying the beach lifestyle.

"I spent last year up here around this area...loved my time up here and you can't argue with the swells."

The Tweed Hospital had six doctors who took part in the preferential program last year and five stayed in the Tweed.

The hospital will be hoping that more of the interns decide to live on the Tweed after their training.
