A MORETON Bay bug farm more than eight years in the making is taking shape at Chinderah.

Motorists using the Murwillumbah exit from the Pacific Hwy should have noticed the sheds being erected on the eastern side of the highway.

Australian Bay Lobster Producers plan to use the facility to produce 165 tonnes of Moreton Bay bugs after the completion of stage one.

According to the company's website, the facility could expand production to 9000 tonnes when fully operational.

The NSW Department of Planning approved the application for the 15-hectare facility on December 2005.

The state government's approval stated that stage one of the aquaculture farm would include the construction of a combined hatchery, grow out and processing facility using above-ground tanks.

As well as the construction of an underground pumping station and subs-sand seawater intake pipeline from Dreamtime Beach, Kingscliff to the main site at Cudgen and a wastewater pipe to the Kingscliff Water Treatment Plant.

Australian Bay Lobster Producers were unavailable to discuss the development at Chinderah.
