THEY have both been identified as talents to watch, Luke Dickens as runner-up in Australian Idol in 2008 and winner of Toyota Starmaker in 2011 and former South Graftonian Luke Austen as the 2010 winner of Starmaker and two Golden Guitar awards since.

The pair, who performed twice in Grafton last weekend, have been chilling out in the Clarence Valley with a bit of a camp on the Nymboida River earlier this week.

Nymboida was the old stomping ground of Luke Austen's dad Whayne who helped his son enter the world of music at a young age with the support of mum Debbie.

"I come from a long line of bushies so even though it's my first stay here I'm feeling right at home," said Dickens who grew up in the Young area and became known as the singing shearer before Idol.

"To come here and put some tunes together with Luke and his dad on the river ... that's what it's all about - that's where the whole country thing began."

The two Lukes are on their second annual Cross the Country tour and are trying to build their fan base.

They thanked sponsors Toyota, who have loaned them a turbo diesel Prado for the 15,000 tour (with fuel thrown in).

Austen said he attended Gilwinga Public School but did his high schooling in Queensland where his dad moved for work in the mines.

The family moved back to South Grafton when Luke was a late teenager and he began his music career in earnest after years of talent quests.

The 31-year-old spent 10 years playing bass for Troy Cassar-Daley before breaking out on his own 2009. He now lives in Nelson Bay.
