Vets lend a helping hand to family who lost home in fire

Clarence Valley Vietnam Veterans Association president Eric Lynn and Karen Greedy celebrate the veterans' donation.
Clarence Valley Vietnam Veterans Association president Eric Lynn and Karen Greedy celebrate the veterans' donation.

THERE were wide smiles yesterday when the Valley's Vietnam veterans donated a cheque to help the Ryan family who lost their home in a fire on October 18.

Karen Greedy, who has driven the fundraising effort, was on hand to accept the donation.

"When I heard they had lost their home I was devastated for them," said Ms Greedy.

"They didn't have a real lot but they lost everything they have."

Ms Greedy said the Ryans were very surprised by the outpouring of generosity from people across the Valley, however, they felt a little awkward as they're not the type of people who are used to asking for assistance.

"It's a little awkward for them," she said.

"They honestly did not expect all the things people have done for them and they are very grateful."

Secretary from Clarence Valley Vietnam Veterans Association, Lorraine Burt, was pleased to see some of the money the organisation raises go to such a good cause.

"This year the Veterans Association has raised $3500 from our raffles and bowls days," she said.

"We were very pleased we could make this donation to the Ryan family after we heard their story."

So far Ms Greedy and others have raised close to $5000 to help the Ryan family rebuild their lives.

There will be a trivia night to raise more funds at 7pm on Friday, November 30 at the South Grafton Servcies Club.
