Severe weather warning for Northern Rivers this weekend

NORTHERN Rivers residents should keep an eye to weather this weekend as ex-cyclone Oswald slides down the Queensland coast.

Some forecasts are calling for extreme rainfall, up as high as 500mm but more likely between 150-300mm. Other forecasts say the storm system may head out to sea east of the Fraser coast taking the rain with it.

But senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology's Brisbane bureau, Pradeep Singh, says coastal conditions on the Northern Rivers will be savage, regardless.

That's because the tropical system, slipping south between two ridges of high pressure, will start to affect our beaches from Friday night through to Monday morning, with winds from the north-east up to 30 knots, and five metre seas coming just eight seconds apart.

Translated, that means the ocean will be a washing machine.

Computer forecasting models have a lot of trouble with tropical systems, so what the depression does after the weekend is not clear.

That's why locals should keep an eye on this storm.

Residents are advised clean up and to store any loose items around their houses.

The one thing the forecasters agree on today is that the rain will not head west, so a large flood is unlikely, with most of the rain confined to the coast.

However, weather does funny things.

Already ex-Oswald has dumped 400mm of rain in 24 hours west of Townsville, and the Fitzroy catchment surrounding Rockhampton looks like it will be the next casualty.
