Storm season expected to kick into overdrive this week

BATTEN down the hatches and have your brollies at the ready because it appears the storm season will kick into overdrive this week.

Senior Weather Channel meteorologist Tom Saunders said storms could be expected across parts of the state every day this week thanks to prime atmospheric conditions.

"The week's storm outbreak began during the weekend and continued yesterday as storms fired up over the central and northern ranges," Mr Saunders said.

"Areas which received the heaviest rain from yesterday's storms include; Murrurundi with 34mm, Narrabri 16mm and the town's heaviest rain in three months, Cessnock 10mm and Scone 10mm."

However Mr Saunders said today was shaping up to see the peak of the week's storm activity with widespread storm activity predicted.

"Severe storms are likely this afternoon which could include Sydney, due to an ideal mix of atmospheric instability, moisture and wind shear," he said,

"The storms are likely to cause severe weather over the south-east quarter of the state including; very heavy rain which could trigger flash flooding, large hail and gale force winds."

Mr Saunders said the storm activity should contract to the ranges by Thursday before another bout develops on Friday and Saturday - he said this would then spread to Northern NSW around Sunday.
