TWEED Council is asking the public to inform it of the locations and movements of feral dogs and foxes across the shire.

The NSW Environmental Trust gave the council $100,000 in funding last year for a project to control feral animals across the Tweed.

Project officer Tanya Fountain said wild dogs, foxes and feral cats are being targeted because of the negative impact they have on native animals.

"Foxes, wild dogs and feral cats are likely to be distributed across the whole Tweed Shire. However, funds under this project are limited and so the proposed fox, wild dog and feral cat control program has been restricted to an area of the Tweed Coast and surrounds, to ensure efforts are targeted and effective," she said.

The distribution of feral animals and wild dogs is expected to be centralised around Wooyung to Kings Forest and west to Sleepy Hollow, Cudgera Creek, Round Mountain, Reserve Creek, Duranbah and Eviron.

"This area has been selected as it provides habitat for many threatened animals susceptible to pest animal predation, including ground-nesting birds, mammals, frogs and the Tweed Coast koala population," Ms Fountain said.

Tweed residents who spot foxes, wild dogs or feral cats are asked to call Ms Fountain on 02 6670 2587 or to email tfountain@tweed.nsw.gov.au.

The Livestock Health and Pest Authority can also offer pest control assistance to those who live in rural areas and they can be contacted by phoning 02 6621 2317.

Additionally, the authority will be holding a brief training course on pest control on March 5 from 9am to midday at Pottsville Environmental Centre.

Bookings are necessary and can be made by contacting Wendy Gibney on 02 6626 7028 or by email at wendy.gibney@byron.nsw.gov.au.
