HOLD ON TIGHT: It was wild weather in Ballina on Monday with extremely strong winds, and Bill, Mary and Dom Howard, from Ballina, had to hang on tight as they checked out the view from Lighthouse Lookout in Ballina.

IT WAS wild, wild weather in Ballina shire on Monday as ex-cyclone Oswald passed over, but the area fared pretty well, according to Ballina State Emergency Service local controller Gerry Burnage.

As winds reached gusts of nearly 90kmh at Ballina airport and the marine rescue tower, Ballina SES had 126 calls on Monday, and about 150 during the long weekend.

The 45 volunteers on duty were able to complete 104 call-outs on Monday.

Mr Burnage said the calls were mainly for wind damage on properties and trees blown down, but without any significant damage.

A piece of roofing was blown off Xavier Catholic College at Skennars Head, and Ballina hospital had some minor roof damage while large trees were uprooted at Ballina Golf Course.

Sand was blown on to the car park near the surf club at Lennox Head and on to North Wall.

Following the storm, Ballina Shire Council is offering residents a free drop-off of garden waste to the waste facility until February 3.

You must show proof of residency.
