STUDENTS from Wooli Public School have recently been awarded the state title of Cleanest Beach.

The school has held the title since 2003 and prides itself on encouraging strong environmental care from its students.

Principal Heather Wright is proud of the students' efforts and is looking forward to seeing their continued enthusiasm in 2013.

"Being awarded Cleanest Beach again this year is truly wonderful," Mrs Wright said.

"It's very encouraging for our students and to the local community. We'd especially like to thank Nick Cranmer for his continued assistance in keeping our beaches clean.

"It's a full community effort and our program wouldn't be possible without the input from community volunteers."

Students are rotated through weekly curriculum-based programs ranging from gardening and plant propagation to dune care and habitat protection.

"It's very important to educate our students in how to properly take care of the environment around them and that's why we introduced these subjects into the curriculum," Mrs Wright said.

Wooli Public School was awarded the title after a rigorous judging process involving submission, on-site assessment and ranking by a panel of industry experts.

Acting CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful Bernie Murphy was very encouraged to see the efforts of the Wooli students.

"Wooli Public School stood out in the North Coast/Northern Rivers region," Mr Murphy said.

"The beaches and surrounds wouldn't be in the state they're in had it not been for the commitment of the school. A very impressive effort by all."
