JANUARY

2: Sydney cancer patient Kristian Anderson dies. He was made famous by posting an online "thank you" video to his wife, which featured Hugh Jackman and New Zealand's prime minister.

3: Hundreds of people gather for the funeral of Sydney paramedic and father of three Mick Wilson who died while trying to rescue a canyoner on the New South Wales South Coast on Christmas Eve.

4: A 28-year-old man recovers in hospital after being attacked by a shark at North Avoca on the Central Coast.

9: Premier Barry O'Farrell assures residents that part of the Pacific Hwy will be upgraded after an 11-year-old boy is killed in his bed when a truck slammed into houses in Urunga.

13: Up to 90% of central western NSW's cherry crop wiped out following heavy rains.

27: More than 2000 people isolated by floodwaters in the NSW north coast with reports of 500mm of rain recorded at some centres. Flood warnings are issued for the Bellinger, Nambucca, Hastings, Macleay, Clarence, Richmond-Wilsons, Tweed and Barwon-Darling rivers, plus Coffs Harbour Creek.

FEBRUARY

3: The Mehi River at Moree, in northern NSW, breaks its banks, flooding much of the town. About 1600 people are evacuated from their homes.

24: Gordon Wood is released from prison and cleared of all charges after serving three-and-a-half years in jail for the murder of fiancee Caroline Byrne at notorious suicide spot The Gap.

MARCH

1: About 75% of the state is already flooded or under threat and hundreds of people have been evacuated. The Warragamba Dam west of Sydney reaches capacity for the first time in more than 10 years.

2: Tamworth highway patrol officer Senior Constable David Rixon was shot and killed during a routine stop. Two men and a woman are arrested.

31: Genieve Blackwell appointed as the first female Anglican bishop in New South Wales.

APRIL

10: Former Comancheros bikie boss Mahmoud "Mick" Hawi jailed for a minimum of 21 years for the bloody 2009 murder of Hells Angels' associate Anthony Zervas at Sydney Airport.

15: Police shoot dead the son of rugby league star Neil Pringle during a dispute at a commune near Tenterfield, in northern NSW. Ryan Pringle was threatening residents and police with a crossbow.

21: Two teenagers shot by police when the stolen car they were travelling in runs over party-goers in Kings Cross. The 14-year-old driver and his 18-year-old passenger eventually recover and are charged along with two other passengers.

27: Fast-food giant KFC ordered to pay $8 million in compensation to the family of a young Sydney girl who suffered brain damage after eating a Twister chicken wrap.

MAY

1: Thousands of NSW farmers march to Parliament House to call on Premier O'Farrell to protect their water and land from coal seam gas mining.

23: Legislation banning bikies from operating tattoo parlours passed in NSW Parliament.

JUNE

12: The NSW "tough times" budget is delivered. What follows is the news no public servant wanted to hear - 10,000 jobs will be lost by 2016.

21: Thousands of NSW firefighters walk off the job to secure workers compensation rights at a rally outside Parliament House.

JULY

3: After more than a week on the run, fugitive Jonathon Stenberg is arrested over the murder of Edward "Ned" Kelly whose headless body was found at the North Coast town of Broadwater on June 21.

7: Teenager Thomas Kelly is king hit in Kings Cross. The 18-year-old later dies at St Vincent's Hospital. Kieran Loveridge, 18, is charged with his murder.

16: Reality-drama The Shire, which follows the lives of 15 people who live in Sydney's lower-middle-class Sutherland Shire, attracts dismal ratings and is cancelled soon after.

AUGUST

27: Counter-terrorism police reveal they have two fresh suspects in the investigation into the 1982 bombings of Sydney's Israeli Consulate and the Hakoah Club at Bondi.

SEPTEMBER

15: Rioting breaks out in Sydney's CBD following the release of an anti-Islamic YouTube video. The violence is condemned by politicians and Muslim leaders.

18: Model turned reality television star Lara Bingle is warned by Sydney judge she will face jail if she fronts court on traffic offences again. The serial road pest is fined $3500, disqualified from driving for one year and released on an 18-month good behaviour bond.

26: Troubled actor Matthew Newton cleared of assaulting a Sydney taxi driver and referred to mental health court.

OCTOBER

2: Father Tom Brennan, the first Australian priest to be charged with covering up the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church, dies in the Hunter Valley before having his day in court.

12: Pioneering heart surgeon Victor Chang's killer released from Sydney prison and deported to Malaysia.

17: Sydney zoo keeper Lucy Melo rushed to hospital after being crushed by an elephant known as Mr Shuffles.

NOVEMBER

1: The state's corruption watchdog begins inquiry into allegations former NSW Labor ministers granted coal mining leases that benefited power broker Eddie Obeid.

2: Roger Kingsley Dean pleads not guilty to the murder of 11 elderly residents who died following a fire in their Sydney nursing home last year.

9: Prince Charles and Camilla delight royal watchers in Sydney.

14: NSW Coroner Mary Jerram finds the behaviour of police in the taser death of Brazilian student Roberto Curti "reckless, dangerous and excessively thuggish".

19: Paul Peters jailed for a minimum of 10 years for attaching a fake collar bomb to the neck of Sydney schoolgirl Madeleine Pulver in an attempt to extort money from her wealthy parents.

26: NSW Treasurer Mike Baird fronts parliamentary hearing to explain State Government's $1 billion budget blunder.

DECEMBER

6: Senior NSW police officer Detective Inspector Bryson Anderson killed at a property near Windsor after responding to reports of a neighbourhood dispute. A mother and son are charged with his murder.
