A HUGE increase in car thefts has been reported in the Richmond-Tweed police division.
According to the NSW Recorded Crime Statistics, there was a massive 23% increase in motor vehicle thefts in the region last year.
The car theft trend was seen across NSW, with a state-wide increase of 7.5% from 2011 compared to 2010.
But on a positive note, violent assaults have fallen in the Richmond-Tweed police division.
Detective Inspector Greg Moore of Richmond LAC says the reduction is a result of police and community cooperation.
"Some of the successful strategies have included the voluntary lockouts in the entertainment precincts, increased police operations in busy periods, covert and overt licensing operations and just general saturation policing during the high risk periods," Det Insp Moore said.
