WHETHER it takes a good eye and a steady hand or just plain luck to catch a good photo is up for debate.

Twenty three amateur photographers from the Tweed will have their stunning snaps judged in the coming weeks.

Fingal Head Community Association president Dawn Walker said the association hosted the photo competition for avid bird watchers in the Tweed to help raise funds for Currumbin wildlife and Tweed wildlife careers.

A staggering amount of photos were entered into the competition which closed on November 2.

"We were thrilled with the response," she said.

"It is important for people to be aware of their local habitat.

"There are a whole range of birds who come out at this time of year."

Mrs Walker said 30 photos had been selected from 23 photographers as finalists.

Fingal Head amateur photographer Tony Caddell had three photos selected for the competition.

"It was a wonderful opportunity and exactly what this area needs," he said.

"I've been taking photos for at least thirty years."

He said it was not a difficult task to capture the magnificent shots because spring attracted a lot of wild life to the area.

Mr Caddell said he had not really thought about winning the $1000 prize but if he did he wouldn't know what to spend it on.

"I haven't thought about it," he said.

"Probably camera gear if I had to pick."

The photos are on display at the Sheoak Shack, cards with the fabulous prints are also being sold to raise money.
