A child’s dreams dashed due to Jetstar policy

XAVIER Lane's dream of studying at a performing arts school was dashed when Jetstar refused to let her board a flight from the Gold Coast yesterday.

The 12-year-old was full of excitement because she was getting on a plane to attend an audition at the Hunter School of The Performing Arts, in Newcastle, where she hoped to study music, majoring in voice.

But today she is back in school at Barkers Vale, near Nimbin, after Jetstar staff told her she was not able to board her flight because she wasn't in high school.

"The lady asked how old I was and I said I was 12," Xavier said.

"Then she asked if I was in primary school or high school."

The honest girl told staff she was in primary school and was refused passage.

"I was upset and my teacher had wasted all his time," she said.

"And mum and dad had wasted time too."

Her 78-year-old grandmother had undertaken a three hour drive from Sydney to Williamstown to meet her at the airport in order to take her to the audition.

The family say they were unaware of the policy and it took My Daily News some time to locate specific information about unaccompanied children flying.

The information can be found on page 6 of a subsection of the terms and conditions.

"It should be crystal clear," Xavier's father, Bill Lane, said.

He said there would be no difference if Xavier was in Grade 6 or Year 7, she's was still 12-years-old, Jetstar's minimum age for flying unaccompanied.

A spokesperson for Jetstar said the rules were clear and were disclosed on the website.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused to this family however our priority is that of the child," Jetstar said.

Jetstar has since appologised to the family, refunded her airfares and said it would look at making the policy clearer.
