JAN Corody is a former model, one of the most successful of her era.

She lives in her Bangalow residence, a beautifully renovated cottage in a park, near the river.

"I first moved to the Northern Rivers in 1997. I had a property in Eureka, but it got to be too much work for me on my own. I decided to come to Bangalow and look around. As soon as I saw this cottage I fell in love with it.

"My son was a carpenter and he did a lot of the alterations and renovations. Then later I had an extension put on the back of the house and we joined a gypsy caravan on to the decking at the back.

"Then, I put in a new kitchen and knocked some walls out to get some light in to it. Before the renovations you had to have the light on the whole time.

"I also ripped up all the carpets which were horrible. The floorboards were great but not in such good condition, so I painted them. I also put in bifold doors out to the deck. They make the place look and feel much bigger. I also put in some plantation shutters out on the deck which I was lucky enough to get second-hand.

"I love the house, it has character. I like places with lots of bric a brac. I was an antique dealer for a while and I had a shop called Jan's Jungle. It was back in the early seventies and I sold things like brass beds.

"I have always been inspired by antiques and vintage things and I have always had old houses like this one. This house is particularly well placed in Bangalow. I don't have neighbours which is fantastic and the house overlooks the park.

"I share the house with my two dogs, Chai and Latte and my cat, Burt (after Burt Lancaster because he's so rugged). The animals have full run of the house. Sometimes I think they own the house and I'm just the cleaner who's allowed to live here."
