Alstonville is back on the map

ALSTONVILLE is back on the map after a new sign directing drivers to the village was installed at the major roundabout off the Pacific Highway south of Ballina.

When the Teven interchange roundabout was completed late last year, the original sign for the Bruxner Highway exit only included Lismore and Casino.

But now a bright, new, yellow sign has been installed by Roads and Maritime Services (formerly the RTA), advising motorists that the Bruxner Highway is also the way to Alstonville.

The sign was recently installed by the road authority after a concerted lobbying effort by the Alstonville-Wollongbar Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber vice-president, Candy Fitness, said the new sign had already had an impact by helping visitors find their way to Alstonville to spend money in the local economy.

"I think it helps to direct traffic coming from the north and south (to find Alstonville), so to have our sign back is wonderful," she said.

"I have had positive feedback on it already, with people coming into town saying 'we didn't have any problem getting in here'".

Ms Fitness said other Chamber members had been similarly enthused about the sign being installed.

Ms Fitness said the sign would also help make negotiating the roundabout safer for drivers.

"This could help people who might make mistakes on the roundabout in taking the wrong exit, so it's a win-win for everybody," she said.

The Alstonville-Wollongbar Chamber worked with representatives from the Ballina Chamber of Commerce and the NSW Business Chamber to have the sign installed.

And Ms Fitness said the sign's yellow colour, rather than the typical green and white colouring for road signs, suited Alstonville just perfectly.

"It's got that little bit of happiness to it; like sunshine," she said.
