AFTER giving his Cudgen side a fighting chance of claiming Far North Coast LJ Hooker League cricket first-innings spoils, Michael Anderson will be hoping his teammates can finish the job today.
The former Queensland Country representative had an eventful afternoon against Byron Bay last Saturday, starring with bat and ball.
After taking seven wickets, the paceman then put up strong defiance with the batto ensure his side still has a chance of claiming first- innings honours.
Although he will miss the second day because he is attending a friend's wedding at Tenterfield, Anderson is hopeful his fellow tailenders Damien King and Aaron Laycock can seal a lead for his team.
"I am hoping we can get over the line," Anderson said.
"I was confident of getting out there and knocking them off, but we are in a precarious position.
"Maybe we were a bit over-confident with our batting last week, which didn't help.
"Hopefully we can get out there and make it a close (first innings) finish."
Anderson took 7-37 to help skittle Byron Bay for just 140 in its first innings at Reg Dalton Oval, Kingscliff.
The visitors fought back, though, reducing Cudgen to 8-92 at stumps.
Coming in at No 10, Ander-son hit an unbeaten 26 to give his side a shot at avoiding a first-innings loss.
Whatever happens today, Anderson is confident his team can challenge for prem-iership honours this season.
"I think we have a good team," he said.
"We had a few players come back who had not played for a couple of years (and) we have some good fellows in our side.
"I hope we can be involved (in the finals)."
