A SMALL army of volunteers is preparing a huge amount of food so that Christmas is not such a lonely time for people on the Tweed.
Tweed Community Group secretary/treasurer Kay Newman said last year there were 321 guests and 170 volunteers.
"This year we are expecting about 400 guests and probably about 200 volunteers," Ms Newman said.
"We have a lot of older people but there are homeless who come to the back door to get takeaways.
"A lot of then just feel embarrassed and they don't feel they should be there… and that's unfortunate."
Ms Newman said a lot of teenagers volunteered.
The Christmas Day Lunch will be at Tweed Heads Civic Centre starting at 11.30am on Christmas Day.
Buses will be available for transport and if anyone requires transport can ring Karlene Polglase on 0417 710930 or 02 6674 3535.
Volunteers can ring the same numbers or go to the volunteers meeting on December 17 at 7pm at the Tweed Heads Civic Centre.
So, just how much food is required to feed 400 people? We're told the lunch uses:
- 40 Lions Christmas cakes
- 40kg ham
- 40kg turkey
- 120kg salad
- 410 bread rolls
- 50kg lollies
