ANZAC day kicked off with dawn services across the Tweed.

At Kingscliff over 500 people gathered at the cenotaph to greet a new day and pay tribute to those who fell in war.

Justine Elliot MP wore the medals of her grandfather, Victor Perkins.

"It gives me a personal connection," Mrs Elliot said.

"So many people have some connection to those who died, have served or are serving in the armed forces.

"We all appreciate their efforts to protect our freedom and the freedom of people in other nations."

Hunter McGrath, 11, wore his great grandfather's medals to the service.

Carleton McGrath served in World War II.

"I'm very proud of him," Hunter said.

"It's pretty important to remember what people like him have done.

"I hope I never have to go war.

"I'm only young, but I can imagine how horrible it can be.

"It really makes me appreciate my great grandfather."
