Banana Festival under way



The 50th annual Tweed Banana Festival celebrations get under way this weekend for what should be a golden week.

The Banana Festival Boat Race will run from Tumbulgum Hotel to Murwillumbah Bridge today starting 1pm for surf boats, skis and outriggers.

This evening the Banana Festival Charity Ball which includes the official opening of the festival by 1956 queen Jill McGregor will be held at Murwillumbah Civic Centre.

Tomorrow the Festival Thanksgiving service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church from 9am and at Murwillumbah Showground the Banana Festival Cattle Dog Trials will be contested.

Winners of the Banana Festival Soccer Cup to be contested tomorrow will march with the cup in next weeks parade.

This weekend businesspeople will begin decorating their pre-mises for the window competition to be judged on Wednesday.

Children should prepare entries in the best decorated bike competition to be judged next Saturday at Knox park at 11.15am. Prizes will be awards for best girls and boys entries.

Judging of the Murwillumbah and District Garden competition begins on Monday.
