A KNIFE-WIELDING robber proved no match for security guard Jason McIntosh, who was equipped with just a torch and his dog Diesel.

CK9-SAS officers Mr McIntosh, 36, and Tyrone Taylor were at Wyalla Plaza when they saw two teenagers confront a staff member after he closed the Bottle-O on Monday night.

Police said the 17-year-old men demanded money while threatening the worker with a knife at 9.10pm.

The worker pointed out to the thieves that they were committing an armed robbery within metres of two security guards and they fled empty-handed.

Mr Taylor and his dog Shady tried to prevent the pair from running but they continued along Taylor St.

Mr McIntosh chased the offenders in his utility before he and Diesel cornered the thief armed with the knife.

He ordered the teenager to sit down and he put his hand in his hooded jumper pocket.

"I told him to remove his hand and he pulled out a knife," Mr McIntosh said.

"I said put the knife down, but he put it behind his back.

"He got a bit mouthy, so Diesel had a chat with him and he pulled his head in.

"I rolled (the offender) on to his stomach with my foot so I didn't get in harm's way because the knife was still pretty close."

The pair kept him lying on the ground until police arrived minutes later and arrested the teenager.

The police dog squad caught the second offender and both were charged with attempted armed robbery while in company.

Mr McIntosh said it was the first armed robber he had detained.

"The adrenalin kicks in," he said.
