CASEY Stoner's 2012 MotoGP season has gone from bad to worse.

Joint leader of the championship two races ago, the Aussie dropped 37 points off the pace after a disappointing eighth in Mugello, Italy.

The race was taken out by series leader Jorge Lorenzo who started second on the grid but took up the running on the first lap and finished more than five seconds ahead of Dani Pedrosa.

Stoner said his worst fears were realised when the same problems he experienced in the warm-up hampered his race.

"We just couldn't get the bike working. During our last attempts in warm up we couldn't get anything to work, we weren't very happy with the bike today and I just didn't feel comfortable," Stoner said. "I had a bit of a shake exiting turn 11 and when I arrived at turn 12 I had no brakes.

"I was squeezing them as hard as I could and thought I had enough brake power to stop before the edge of the track but I had too much momentum and had to ride through the gravel trap which wasted a lot of time."

Stoner will be keen to regain some ground when the series heads to Laguna Seca in the US for the next race in two weeks time.

SERIES POINTS: Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) 185; Dani Pedrosa (Honda) 166; Casey Stoner (Honda) 148; Andrea Dovisiosa (Yamaha) 108; Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha) 95
