Muster campfire lighters warned

A CAMPFIRE left unattended during the day at the Muster campgrounds this week may have been the last straw that sparked a daytime fire ban during the length of festival.

Gympie police stationed at the Muster mobile police station received a report from several concerned campers about a campfire left going while site holders were nowhere to be seen.

Officers attended the campsite and put out the fire, issuing a warning to the offending campers.

“It may have just rained recently but these winds can easily carry a spark into a nearby tent,” Sergeant Vic Tipman said.

“With so many campsites in such a small area, it’s a safety issue.”

Queensland Parks and Wildlife officers promptly responded and were putting up fire ban signs on Wednesday to alert campers of the fire ban between 9am and 5pm.

It was believed the fire ban had taken affect on Tuesday and anyone responsible for contravening the ban would be dealt with by way of a large fine.
