CANDIDATES were up early on Tuesday morning to attend a Tweed Chamber of Commerce breakfast.

Warren Polglase, Katie Milne, Barry Longland, Eddie Roberts, Bruce Campbell, Carolyn Byrne, Jayne Henry, Chris Cherry and Russell Logan all spoke on why they chose to nominate for the September Tweed council elections.

The candidates that did attend the meeting were given five minutes to introduce themselves and discuss economic development, water and finance.

The building of Byrrill Creek Dam for water security was an unpopular option with most candidates that attended the breakfast.

Warren Polglase and ex dairy farmer Bruce Campbell were the only two candidates to openly support the Byrrill Creek Dam proposal.

Cr Polglase, who is vice president of the chamber, said there needed to be more business input into a future council.

"I have never seen it so tough for people in the Tweed," Cr Polglase said after the breakfast.

"The council has to find a new direction.

"We can't rely so much on subdivisions and building houses."

He said a business advisory group of professionals should be formed to advise the council.

"The council is not experienced enough to know if an idea is not going to work," he said.

The business advisory idea received support from many at the breakfast but other candidates became the targets of criticism.

Both Katie Milne, on her economic credentials, and Michael Armstrong, on running as a member of a political party, came under fire from audience members.

Mr Armstrong said his membership to the Labor Party was based on philosophical principles and he wanted to be honest with voters.

Dot Holdom arrived after candidates spoke to answer attendees' questions.
