COOLANGATTA'S CCTV is an effective investigative tool but does not often act as a deterrent to criminal activity.

Police confirmed that despite Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate installing cameras throughout the Gold Coast, crime has remained at a similar level to last year.

But CCTV does help police catch and charge offenders.

Coolangatta Police sergeant Steve Quinn said crime was at similar level but the CCTV was "a great investigative tool" and said it made catching criminals easier.

"The system lets us see the types of offences being committed," he said.

"Great thing about the cameras is that we can fix them on hotspot venues."

Sgt Quinn said the still images the cameras take often leads to offenders being charged for crimes, instead of escaping the law.

"We get a good visual image of the offender," he said.

"A lot of the evidence we can collect after the offence."

Sgt Quinn said that combined with public assistance and services such as Crimestoppers, more criminals were being caught and charged as a result of CCTV in Coolangatta.

Brent Dorrington of Mad Huis Surf Shop in Coolangatta said he thought there should be more cameras in the CBD.

"I think the cameras are a great idea, there should be more of them," he said

Mr Dorrington recalled a friend being severely assaulted in Coolangatta and said that more cameras could have prevented the attack, or at least made the offenders easier to apprehend.

He thought the cameras were mainly used to catch offenders and were not preventing most crimes.

"I think they're mainly getting caught after the fact," he said.
