IT WAS the year of the girls this year, with many young women from the region blitzing their HSC to receive outstanding ATAR results.

Mark Youngblutt, the Department of Education and Communities' North Coast Relieving Regional Director, congratulated the local graduates, noting the area had 291 graduates on the 2012 Distinguished Achievers list - those who had scored over 90 in a subject.

"I'm sure many young adults on the North Coast are relieved it's all over and I hope they get a well-deserved holiday before starting university, an apprenticeship or work," he said.

Mr Youngblutt also extended his congratulations to Mullumbimby High School, which had three students on the All Rounders list of students who scored above 90 in at least 10 units of study: Bodhi Dun, Yindi Sutton and Julia Riches.

From Trinity Catholic College Lismore, Divya Venkataraman achieved an ATAR of 97.9 and came sixth in the state in Extension 2 English; Laura Pirlo had an ATAR of 97.75 and came ninth in the state in Music; Hannah Taylor scored an ATAR of 97.7; and Bonnie Graham achieved an ATAR of 95.8 and came second in the state in Food Technology.

Laura said she was over the moon about her results, but couldn't quite believe it.

"I was so shocked," she said.

Laura said she was planning to study Interior Design next year in Brisbane; however, she'll continue with her music studies.

Divya was another Trinity girl surprised and relieved after working so hard. "It's just a relief. Now we can look forward to uni," she said.

Divya said she was hoping to head to the University of NSW next year to do Law and International studies.

Xavier Catholic College Ballina also had a top year with a handful of students getting great marks.

Karly Potts scored an amazing ATAR of 99.60, and came 16th in the state in Advanced English.

She also made the All Rounders list for 10 units with marks over 90, as did Talen Pinxteren, who scored 98.95; Brianna Wood 97.30; and Amanda Brooker an ATAR of 96.60 with a sixth in the state in Legal Studies.

From Byron Bay High School, two girls led the front, with Vivian Joncourt receiving an outstanding ATAR of 99.30 and Ruby Kammoora hot on her heels with a fantastic 99.25.
