AS THE clean-up continues after flood, Clarence Valley Council crews are preparing to tackle the task of returning our beaches to their renowned pristine condition.

The remnants of ex-cyclone Oswald hammered Yamba and the big restoration job is likely to begin this weekend. Road closure restrictions have been blocking council's efforts to move in the equipment needed for the remedial work.

Mayor Richie Williamson said council staff were ready to meet contractors on site on Saturday (2 February) when roads were expected to re-open.

"Already we have seen tides and swell moving 25 per cent of the large quantity of material from Yamba's Convent Beach, greatly assisting the task, " Cr Williamson said.

"The situation is likely to remain dynamic over the coming days.

"To clean-up Yamba's Main Beach, council is proposing to load single-axle trucks (weight restricted access road) with an excavator and transporting waste to a site for most of the debris to be grinded into mulch.

"The site at Main Beach will be closed from the top car park to ensure public safety. A similar plan will be undertaken at Turners Beach. The initial focus is with Main Beach, Turners Whiting and Pippie Beaches. We will continue to explore possible options should debris at Convent Beach remain."

It is expected that the works will start as soon as possible.

"While the offers of community assistance are appreciated, to ensure safety and to deal with the large volume of debris it is recommended closing the beaches to undertake these works," the Mayor said.
