Crusaders muster to cull cane toads

TIME'S up for many Tweed cane toads.

TWEED Council's pest management program leader Pamela Gray will lead a cane toad muster at the Koala Beach estate tonight (Wednesday).

The aim of the muster is to gather as many of the notorious pests as possible for humane culling.

Miss Gray said that the muster was expected to be very successful.

"Going on previous musters we're looking at three or four hundred toads with the wet weather in full swing," she said.

"On a bright, starry night we usually get about 15 to 20 people, if it's raining we'll get fewer. But it is the best weather to catch toads.

Miss Gray said the toad populations around Koala Beach were normal for coastal areas, but the muster would have a positive impact on native wildlife.

"The thing is that a lot of new developments have sediment ponds to collect stormwater. They provide good breeding habitats for cane toads," she said.

Miss Gray also mentioned that in the future it would be necessary to put low fences and native vegetation around the sediment ponds.

"We're working with local communities to ensure the ponds are toad proof," she said.

"Crews will also be running a few more musters over the season."

She added that the toads would meet their maker in the most humane way possible, through the use of carbon dioxide gas.

"They will be humanely euthanised by CO2 as recommended by the DPI (Department of Primary Industries)," she said.

Cane toad crusaders will meet at 7.30-8.00pm at the corner of Bottlebrush Dr and Sassafras St and kids must be accompanied by an adult.

They will need a torch as well as a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and covered shoes.

The muster was originally going to be held on February 22, but particularly bad weather conditions forced a change of date.
