UPDATE: THE dingo did it.

Lindy Chamberlain's famous assertion got an unexpected airing in the Hervey Bay District Court yesterday when a man accused of stabbing another in the stomach blamed a dingo for the attack.

Judge Leanne Clare was no doubt surprised when Mitchell Treyvaud, who is facing a charge of unlawful wounding over a knife attack at the Coconut Grove caravan park, told her "the dingo did it".

Things only got stranger when Treyvaud dismissed his solicitor after calling him offensive names, told Judge Clare he was not in a position to proceed because he was "standing still" and later fell off his chair on to the floor.

The 53-year-old dismissed his entire legal team.

"You need to refrain from being offensive," Judge Clare said. "I will not put up with rubbish like that."

Treyvaud has been in custody since January 11, after the alleged stabbing which saw a 41-year-old man taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He seemed confused about his stance after declaring himself guilty in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court and then remaining silent when asked for a plea in the District Court.

"I'm just having difficulty understanding your position," Judge Clare said.

"I'm standing still," Treyvaud told her. He further stated, "I don't boil my cabbages twice" and disrupted proceedings by skipping around the dock, mumbling to himself and loudly asking a policeman if he was in the TV show Two and a Half Men.

Judge Clare had to adjourn the case so Treyvaud could undergo a mental health examination.

"His behaviour this morning seemed to me to be provocative," she said.

"But it could be something more."

EARLIER: IT was a bizarre morning in the Hervey Bay District Court on Tuesday when a man accused of stabbing another in the stomach told the judge "the dingo did it".

Judge Leanne Clare was no doubt surprised to hear Lindy Chamberlain's famous words coming from Mitchell Treyvaud, who is facing a charge of unlawful wounding over a knife attack at the Coconut Grove caravan park.

Things only got stranger when Treyvaud dismissed his solicitor after calling him offensive names and told Judge Clare he was not in a position to proceed because he was "standing still".

Treyvaud has been in custody since January 11, after the alleged stabbing which saw a 41-year-old man taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 53-year-old appeared to be having some confusion about how he wanted to proceed, after declaring himself guilty in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court and then remaining silent when asked for a plea in the District Court.

Treyvaud further told the Judge, "I don't boil my cabbages twice" and when she asked how long he'd been in custody he said "Six years...Weeks?".

Judge Clare adjourned the court so that the prosecution could make inquiries about Treyvaud's state of mental health.

The matter will be mentioned again on Tuesday afternoon.
