Don’t increase height of levee: Concerned resident

AS BRUCE Green sees things, if you build a levee bank to protect Peter you're going to cover Paul in water.

And the Lawrence resident said he is sick of listening to Graftonians whinge when people down-river regularly face severe flooding.

Mr Green pointed to a section of levee near Lawrence which collapsed during the recent floods.

He said the wall often flooded on both sides.

However because there was no water in surrounding swamps during January this time the levee faced pressure from the river side only.

"Of course it's also possible there were fox burrows in the wall that the water ran through and ate away the wall," Mr Green said.

Mr Green said he was opposed to the levee in Grafton being built higher as it would increase flood heights elsewhere.

"It's no good saying make the levee higher because all you'll do is push the water somewhere else."

Deputy general manager of the council Rob Donges said he was aware of the collapsed levee near Lawrence.

He said workers were yet to fully assess the damage, however once they had, an application would be made to the State Government for funding to pay for the repairs.

He also said there might be delays until water filling the areas around the levee subsided.
