FROM Grandpa's bowler hats to gloves and furs fit for a queen, the newest exhibition at Crawford House shows off all there is to love about costume accessories and fashion from the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

Heads, Necks, Hands and Tootsies: An Exhibition of Costume Accessories has opened at the Crawford House Museum in Alstonville, airing out the range of old-time accessories that the Alstonville Plateau Historical Society have in their midst.

Vice president of the Society, Ina le Bas said that it was a good chance for the society and museum to show off all these items they had in storage.

"And it's a great chance to show people what we've got," she said.

At the exhibition you will find a huge array of hats all from the period, including special smoker's caps - hats that were worn to stop men's hair smelling of smoke - as well as shoes, bags and other bits and bobs.

And then there is the whole room of furs, scarves and gloves - including a pair of classic white Christian Dior gloves from the period.

Mrs le Bas said the exhibition will be very nostalgic for many of the visitors of the exhibitions, as she feels quite that way herself.

She said she can remember the days when you never stepped outside without first putting on your hat and gloves, and said she recalled the classic vision of her mother draping over a fur coat before heading off to a ball.

"I remember going into town with my neighbour, and after going to the toilets at a hotel, my neighbour said 'Ina, come back and put your gloves on!' - it was as scandalous as a man coming out of the bathroom still zipping up his pants!"
