BRUNSWICK HEADS surf life savers plucked a naked, alcohol and drug affected man from treacherous seas at New Brighton at 4.30pm on Monday.

Police were alerted by an off-duty police officer that a man was trying to surf with little success and was in danger of drowning 200m off South Golden Beach.

Jimmy Keogh from Surf Lifesaving Far North Coast said a team of life savers travelled from Brunswick Heads to New Brighton in an inflatable rescue boat.

They quickly spotted the man, with the assistance of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter which was hovering overhead, and escorted him to shore where two police officers were waiting.

The 46-year-old man from Byron Bay was detained by the officers and taken back to Byron police station after refusing to obey a directive to leave the beach, Acting Inspector Leanne Edmonds from Tweed-Byron police said.

He was later released from custody,
