Easter Sunday a ripper at Bluesfest

The Pogues
The Pogues

THE Easter bunny left plenty of musical treats for Bluesfest fans yesterday.

The fourth day of the annual festival saw headliners The Pogues and John Butler Trio both attract big crowds despite their late-night closing sets.

Pogues front man Shane MacGowan sang his first few songs - wearing sunglasses and holding a lit cigarette.

He removed his shades before launching into the Irish punk band's popular rendition of Waltzing Matilda.

Meanwhile on the Mojo stage, Bluesfest regular John Butler opened his set with Don't Wanna See Your Face from his most recent album April Uprising, followed by Used to Get High from the band's 2007 album Grand National.

After technical issues with his Saturday show, America blues man Seasick Steve's second performance at the Crossroads stage went off without a hitch - except for a broken chair that was quickly replaced.

He took the opportunity to invite Aussie rockers Wolfmother on stage to sing a song he wrote with the band in Byron Bay about the global financial crisis.

At the nearby Jambalaya stage American soul singer Candi Staton had the crowd dancing with her disco hit Young Hearts Run Free.

Today's closing bill of the five-day festival sees former Creedence Clearwater Revival front man John Fogerty play his second show.

English rock band Yes will play the final show on the Mojo stage while Maceo Parker will close the Crossroads stage.
