How many celebrities can you squeeze into one photo? Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres gets some help from Bradley Cooper in taking this epic selfie.

OSCARS host Ellen DeGeneres took moment during today's show to snap a selfie with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, and it was all too much for Twitter.

DeGeneres was seen snapping the photo, which includes Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey, Jared Leto, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, on the live television broadcast.

Shortly after she and the official Academy Twitter handle, @theacademy, posted the photo the micro blogging site froze.

When users tried to refresh their feeds they were met with an error message.

But the issue was quickly resolved, that is unless Ellen posts any more star-studded selfies today.

DeGeneres's original tweet with the photo is now the most re-tweeted post ever in the history of Twitter, with more than 1.42 million shares and counting.

The Academy was quick to joke about the social media meltdown, tweeting:

The Academy apologises for shutting down Twitter.
