Fickle weather is set to continue across the Tweed

WEATHER is fickle at the best of times but forecasters must be pulling their hair out this summer after weeks of unstable weather.

Dry and hot conditions experienced at the start of December, when temperatures at Murwillumbah hit 38 degree, lasted a few days in early December before the region was hit with unstable weather bringing rain and widely varying temperatures.

According to Bureau of Meteorology, the minimum for December reached close to 15 degrees on Christmas Day.

It looks like the pattern is set to continue with a cool change tomorrow expected to keep maximum temperatures down to the mid 20s and possible showers for the following five days.

Weather is also paying havoc on the beaches across the Tweed and southern Gold Coast.

With cyclone activity throughout the South Pacific, Surf Life Saving Queensland warned swimmers to be vigilant in the surf today.

Surf Life Saving Gold Coast regional manager Eddie Bennet said the rescue had reports from the Bureau of Meteorology to expect large swells throughout the entire Sunshine and Gold coasts.

With waves up to 3m in some areas, swimmers will be no match for the power they can generate," Mr Bennet said.

"Our lifesavers have been extremely busy over the past couple of weeks with rescues due to the large swells. The waves might look like fun but remember it only takes a split second to lose control. These rough conditions are expected until Wednesday."

All beachgoers are urged to swim between the red and yellow flags and if in doubt speak to the lifesavers or lifeguards on duty.

"When you swim between the flags you are on our radar, we know you're there and are ready to help. But swimming outside of these areas is extremely dangerous - remember if we can't see you, we can't save you," Mr Bennet said.
