Filmmaker wins international fans

STILL jet-lagged from successful screenings at festivals on both sides of the US, Ipswich filmmaker Talisha Elger is already planning her next project.

The 24-year-old director and producer from Walloon claimed the prize for Best Foreign Film at this month's Indie Fest USA in Los Angeles for her 12-minute production The Fears of Young Caroline.

It capped off a dream year in which she also had the film shown at the famous Cannes Film Festival, and the New York City International Film Festival before her success in LA.

Ms Elger said she had hoped to make an impact with what was her first independent film since graduating from a film and television course at the Southbank Institute of Technology.

Starting in November last year and finishing just before the Cannes Film Festival in May, Ms Elger worked with a budget of between $8000 and $10,000.

"A lot of time and money went into this film," she said.

"It is mainly the equipment that contributes to the costs - about half the cost is just for equipment."

Parts of Ms Elger's home town - including North Ipswich and Pring St, near St Andrew's Hospital - formed the backdrop for what she described as an alternative drama.

Her eclectic tastes were developed from an early age, with parents Kim and Trevor Elger revealing an early attraction to Stanley Kubrick's masterpieces.

"We started taking her to watch films at an early age - when she saw The Shining at age 10, she was hooked," Mrs Elger said.

"Then when she was 14 she insisted on being allowed to watch A Clockwork Orange.

"When we eventually agreed to let her watch it, she didn't even notice the violence.

"She just kept commenting on the way lighting was used and other film techniques."

When it came to her own masterpiece, the budding filmmaker was reluctant to give too much of the plot away - especially given the short duration of the movie.

The main characters were played by Brisbane actors Anastasia Surrey and Luke Howell.

Now with an international gong under her belt, Ms Elger's next step will be to make another short film she hopes will be a sort of preview for a full-length production further down the track.

"I am just starting to write a feature film script," she said.

"This film will be very dark - possibly a thriller or along those lines.

"It is kind of boring to make the same type of movie all again so I want to do something different.

"The more unique you make a film the more it will stand out from the rest."
