French's crusade for baby elephant

HERVEY Bay animal crusader Amanda French has called on the Fraser Coast to help save a baby elephant in a campaign that took her all the way to Sumatra.

Ms French is part of a team of three Queenslanders out to save Bona, an orphaned two-year-old Sumatran Elephant who was found malnourished and close to death in an Indonesian palm-oil plantation.

Earlier this month, the team flew to Sumatra to smooth the way for Bona's first month's supply of food through customs.

Bona is lactose-intolerant and consumes $45 worth of baby formula every day at a total of $2000 each month.

As donations poured in at the beginning of the campaign, they were able to purchase two months' worth of supply and a year's supply of calcium.

The Save Bona campaign still needs $24,000 to fund the next 12 months of supplements but donations have now slowed down despite lots of love pouring in from the community.

"We were really surprised that it has been taken up by so many people," Ms French said.

Visit savebona.com for more information on the campaign or visit the facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/savebona.
