GIZZMO the groodle was not the only one wagging his tail in delight after he lent a paw to help Grafton dog groomer Jane Bourke win the salon freestyle open Pet Industry Association of Australia, Brisbane Royal Grooming section at the Royal Queensland Show last week.

A regular customer at Ms Bourke's local pet grooming salon, The Naked Hound, Gizzmo was on his best behaviour throughout the competition as his dark blonde coat was bathed, groomed and expertly styled by Ms Bourke before a panel of judges.

Describing her triumph in her debut competition at the Royal Queensland Show - commonly known as Ekka - as a surprise, Ms Bourke praised her four-legged-assistant and thanked his owners for loaning him.

"He (Gizzmo) was great," she said.

"He was the best and I'm thankful to his owners Kim and Jim Payne for allowing me to enter the competition.

"I decided to enter Ekka to expand my grooming skills and I couldn't believe it when I was announced the winner."

Ms Bourke has been grooming dogs for four years and enjoys the challenge of her occupation.

"It's rewarding," she said.

On average, Ms Bourke grooms between 10 and 26 dogs a day at The Naked Hound. She said it takes a lot of patience and vision to be a good dog groomer.

Before styling each pooch, Ms Bourke assesses the main points of the canine and grooms the hair so it looks in symmetry with the body.

She said it can take up to one-and-a-half hours to groom a dog, depending on the breed and type of coat.

"Some take longer than others, but it also depends on the style of the cut the owner's request," Ms Bourke said.

She celebrated her success in Brisbane by treating herself to a coffee while Gizzmo returned home to be pampered by his owners. This weekend, Ms Bourke will compete in the Groom Quest Australia Competition in Sydney.

A groodle is a golden retriever crossed poodle.
