Grandma's a drag!

Lyn Stewart doesn’t let her age get in the way of her accelerator foot when it comes to the drag track.

LYN Stewart may be pushing 62, but the only number this drag-racing grandmother cares about is the one that features on the stop watch.

At a time when most women her age are baking scones and knitting cardigans, Mrs Stewart is giving young rev heads around the Downs a run for their money.

And her motivation for taking her Holden Gemini wagon to speeds it was never meant to reach is a very special one - in memory of her husband, Mark, who was fatally injured in a work accident in May.

She will climb back in the driver's seat at the next Morgan Park race meeting in August and said though it would be hard, it's what he would have wanted.

"It's going to be difficult for me to get back out there, but I will give it my best shot," she said.

Mrs Stewart started drag racing in 2004 and has loved her time on the track ever since, especially when she raced in Warwick.

"You get out there and your accelerator leg starts shaking; it's not as easy as it looks," she said.

"Everyone out there (at Morgan Park) is just like family.

"We go to Warwick and camp overnight and have lots of laughs, wake up and have a great brekky and in between all this we go drag racing."

Mrs Stewart said the secret to her success behind the wheel was simple.

"You must sleep with your mechanic!" she quipped.

"And my hubby was my mechanic."

She said she and her late husband always imagined they would be 85 years old and still burning rubber like wild children, but now she will carry on the tradition to honour the love of her life.

"I hope to be doing it for a long time," she said.
