GOLFERS at next month's PGA Australian Legends Tour Championship event at Byron Bay Golf Club will not only be chasing $50,000 in prize money, they also will be shooting for a $30,000 car.

A Subaru Forester will be up for grabs for the first player (professional or amateur) to score a hole-in-one at the par 3, fifth hole, on the first day of the competition.

As in previous years, the normal back nine holes will become the opening nine, with the finishing hole (the normal ninth) in front of the clubhouse.

Club professional Greg Stewart said this year's field was exceptional and included last year's winner Ian Baker-Finch and 2009 winner Peter Senior.

Other players include Peter Fowler, Bob Shearer, Mike Harwood, Rodger Davis, Terry Gale, Terry Price, 2007 winner David Merriman and 2008 winner Noel Ratcliffe.

Stewart said it looked like there would be a full field of 70 professionals, with all amateur spots for the pro-am days taken.

He said ground staff had been working around the clock to get the course into top shape for the event.

The recent dry spell caused a setback but the recent rain had been welcome, he said.

The tournament will be held over three days from Tuesday, December 18.

It will be preceded by a meet-the-pros night on Monday, December 17, which will feature a nearest-the-pin shootout at 6.30pm.

Play on the first two days starts at 6.30am, with a shotgun start at 11am on the final day.

Entry is free and open to everyone.
