THIS weekend is one for the aviation enthusiasts and history buffs, with the annual Great Eastern Fly-In taking over Evans Head.

The unique Australian aviation event begins on Friday and goes through until Sunday at Evans Head Aerodrome, where pilots, and their families and friends will fly in from all over Australia to come together and enjoy this great weekend.

Great Eastern Fly-In president Gai Taylor said that this year was set to be one of the best ever, and should be special, as it is the Fly-In's 21st anniversary. "It's a milestone for us, we've got some wonderful aeroplanes coming, the weather is looking fantastic, it looks like it's all coming together for a really good weekend," she said.

Mrs Taylor said one thing she was really looking forward to was the appearance of the P-51 Mustang, the famed Second World War fighter, which is being brought up from Maitland.

"It's such an iconic aircraft," she said.

Mrs Taylor said there was something for everyone at this year's event, with a huge variety of aircraft, as well as other machinery on display - such as the fantastic Classic Cars, with vintage, veteran, WW2 military vehicles and more to be on show.

"We just want to get people enjoying aircraft," she said.

There's even a lot of entertainment for the kids, including a jumping castle and face painting, as well as a special kids' colouring corner.

Mrs Taylor said that on the Sunday afternoon, there will be recognition for one of their members lost this past year, with a memorial fly-past held for the late Jean Haughton-James.

Mrs Haughton-James was heavily involved in the aviation culture in Evans Head, and was a WAAF who served in Evans Head during the Second World War, later producing a book called Wings at War.

The Great Eastern Fly-In is held at the Evans Head Aerodrome January 4-6 with entry by gold coin donation.
