TWEED police have found a dog safe and well inside a sedan that was reported stolen on Saturday.

Gold Coast police appealed for public assistance to locate the dachshund, or sausage dog, that was inside a sedan stolen from Mermaid Waters.

Tweed Police Inspector Greg Jago said the police received a tip off that a car matching the description was in the Tweed Hospital carpark today.

According to police, the car with the dog inside was stolen after a man and a woman stopped at a traffic accident in Mermaid Waters to assist the injured.

A male driver of one of the vehicles involved in the crash stole the witnesses' car with their pet dog inside.
