A POTTSVILLE man who transported 35 ponies in a removalist truck, killing 25 of them through lack of ventilation, will spend at least six months in jail.

Shane Jason Dean, 39, faced Glen Innes Local Court today charged with 25 counts of aggravated cruelty on an animal.

New England Local Area Command were called to the Ben Lomond Range off the New England Hwy south of Glen Innes last December where they found the decomposing carcasses of 25 ponies.

Initial police reports suggested 35 ponies had been transported by a removalist truck, loaded in the Kingstown district to head to the north coast.

Without adequate ventilation, 25 ponies died.

Police charged Dean shortly after.

Magistrate Mark Richardson sentenced Dean to two years imprisonment with parole after six months.
