THE annual Kmart Wishing Tree appeal, run in cooperation with the Salvation Army, is celebrating its 25th anniversary and over the last 24 years has managed to collect more than five million gifts for needy Australian families.

This year the appeal aims to add another 500,000 gifts to the total and to celebrate the appeal's anniversary, the choirs of Banora Point, Centaur and Bilambil primary schools recently sent its finely tuned vocalists to the Kmart store at Tweed City Shopping Centre.

The choirs sang a number of Christmas Carols and to the students' delight were on hand to witness to cutting of an anniversary cake and consume some of the deliciously sweet treat.

Salvation Army welfare worker Richard Hardaker said although it was a little early to tell, the appeal was going well.

"We don't really have a goal where the number of gifts is concerned and are grateful for any presents people want to donate.

"If people want to contribute, they can leave their gifts with the staff of Tweed City's Kmart store," Mr Hardaker said.

The Salvation Army collects gifts on behalf of over 250 Tweed families and hopes to play a part in making this a happy Christmas for the most disadvantaged families in the region.

Salvation Army representative Leanne Elsley thanked the community for its amazing generosity and for sharing the gift of giving which makes such a difference in people's lives.

The 2012 Kmart Wishing Tree appeal runs from November 12 until December 24.
