Keep off this footpath, it’s private property

Overgrown and out-of-bounds, this walkway is closed to the public in Murwillumbah.

MYSTERY surrounds the ownership of a piece of land bordering the Tweed River at Murwillumbah.

A narrow piece of land running along the riverside of the floodwall from the bridge, leading behind the Southern Cross Credit Union towards the council chambers, contains a footpath which is marked "private property" and is closed to the public.

Long grasses and shrubs have grown over the pathway and made it nearly impossible to use the footpath to reach the area near the bridge.

The question on most people's mind is why this piece of land is in private hands in the first place?

A council spokesman suggested the land was owned by a company named Yelfor but My Daily News was unable to confirm this.

A member of staff of a cafe next to the credit union said he believed the land was owned by the person who owned the building where the cafe was located but was unable to identify the individual.

In the meantime, the footpath remains out of bounds to the general public and its ownership and future in doubt.
