GET INVOLVED: The Relay for Life is being held in Ballina later this month, and an information night on October 4 will explain ways that you can get involved.

BALLINA Shire residents and all Relay for Life participants are invited to an information night about the event.

It will be held on Thursday, October 4, at the Ballina RSL Club and will be an opportunity for people to discover how they can participate in this important community fundraiser.

"Since 2003, Relay For Life has brought the Ballina Shire communities together to walk through the night to raise money for the Cancer Council NSW and the fight against cancer," said regional programs co-ordinator Sandra Rowan.

Ballina Shire Relay for Life will take place at Kingsford Smith Park from 3pm on Saturday, October 27, ending at 9am on Sunday, October 28.

During the event, groups of locals will take turns walking or running through the night to raise funds for the Cancer Council's world-class cancer research, education and support programs.

"People will bring their tents and camp overnight as a community," Ms Rowan said.

"There will be free entertainment, games for the kids and even prizes for best dressed tent, best decorated banner and relay baton."

Ceremonies will also be held throughout the event to honour locals who have been touched by cancer. At dusk the track will be lined with candles and messages dedicated to loved ones who have faced cancer.

"There are many ways to join Relay for Life," Ms Rowan said.

"For example, you can help organise the event, captain a team, be a volunteer on the day, or provide entertainment.

"Just come along to the information evening and we'll help you find the best opportunity to get involved."
