TRACY Noe doesn't know what the secret to the longevity is, but her American staffy, Maggie, is celebrating her 19th birthday on Wednesday.

Tracy said one of the reasons Maggie had lived so long was that she was treated like part of the family.

Maggie was a birthday present to her then seven-year-old son, Daniel.

"I've had her for nearly half my life. I don't know what her secret is. She's still quite fit and just keeps on keeping on," Mrs Noe said.

"Right now it's all about quality of life, and she seems to be doing alright.

"She has a few old-people type illnesses - but that's okay considering she's 133 in human years."

Tracy also had a six-year-old rottweiler which had to be put down recently.

"Maggie was really depressed when Eva left.

"She was very down and lonely, but now she has Lola, an RSPCA rescue puppy, for company. It has really brought her spirits back up."

Maggie still enjoys going for car rides, going on walks with her dad Ray, the occasional chicken neck and cooling off in the pool or with an ice block on a hot day.

The record for the oldest dog to have ever lived is held by Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who died in 1939, aged 29 years and five months.
