BALLINA Shire Council rangers and police are still investigating the dumping of a dead calf outside the Ballina court house yesterday.

In a macabre protest, a disgruntled court attendee allegedly dumped a frozen calf carcass outside the court after a neighbour dispute case didn't go the way he wanted.

Dead calf dumped outside Ballina court

Richmond Local Area Command Inspector Bill McKenna said a 57-year-old man dumped the carcass after appearing in court.

"It was a rather unusual situation," he said.

Court registrar Christine McKenzie said the animal was found on a seat outside the building after court commenced at 9.30am.

Court staff contacted police and council rangers.

Insp McKenna said the man allegedly had the frozen calf in the boot of his car when he attended court for an apprehended violence order matter involving a dispute with neighbours.

"Police and Ballina Council rangers attended and the matter is now being investigated by Ballina Council," he said.

"At the end of court proceedings he placed the carcass outside the court and drove off."

Ballina Shire Council Group Manager Development and Environmental Health Rod Willis said council rangers collected the calf and disposed of it at a nearby facility.

He said rangers were working with police to investigate cruelty or animal disposal issues.

Businesses in the vicinity of the court contacted by The Northern Star were unaware of the incident.

Police are yet to charge anyone over the dumping of the calf.
