A PROTESTER leapt onto the back of a truck at the CSG protest at The Avenue, Glenugie yesterday and secured a water sample.

Police were on site monitoring an attempt by protesters to prevent the truck from leaving.

They asked the protester to get down.

There were no arrests or charges.

The incident occurred during a scheduled visit to the site by Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell and Byron mayor Simon Richardson.

Cr Dowell denied that the mayors' visit was an act of political grandstanding.

She subsequently acted as a courier when she offered to take the water sample to a lab at Southern Cross University in Lismore where it will undergo testing.

Describing herself as vehemently opposed to CSG, Ms Dowell said yesterday's visit was organised by Cr Richardson and gave the Northern Rivers mayors an opportunity to meet and speak with the protesters and to see the CSG site.

"I wanted to thank them all for taking a stand against CSG. I also encouraged them to stay calm and not to resort to violence," she said.

"CSG is incompatible with the Northern Rivers and I do not want to see it affect our communities."

Despite Clarence Valley deputy mayor Craig Howe welcoming the visit by the mayors, he said their timing could have been better.

Cr Howe said Clarence Valley councillors were notified on Tuesday of the visit but many, including Mayor Richie Williamson, were unable to accompany them as they were on annual leave.

"The visit could have been better organised so more local councillors could have gone," he said.

Cr Howe said support from other regions is appreciated.

He plans to visit the site soon.
