Mike Hussey says farewell in style

WHILE his undoubted modesty didn't see him hit the winning runs, Mike Hussey got the Test cricket farewell he richly deserved at the SCG in Australia's five-wicket win over Sri Lanka yesterday.

Batting with Mitchell Johnson with the 141-run fourth-innings target in sight, Johnson curbed his attacking instincts to dead-bat the ball in an effort to let the 79-Test champion bring up the winning runs.

But Hussey called Johnson through for the winning single, leaving the Sydney crowd momentarily stunned, but surprising no-one who has watched Hussey put his team first during his entire career.

The West Australian finished on 27 not out and once again played a rescue mission for which he was so renowned for throughout his distinguished career.

He came to the crease at 3-104 with the visitors applying pressure and appealing for everything as they desperately chased their first win on Australian soil.

Most of the appeals came when classy off spinner Rangana Herath (3-47) had the ball, removing Ed Cowan, Phil Hughes and Matthew Wade on a wearing fourth-day pitch.

But Cowan scraped his way to 36 and was the fourth man down with the score at 108, allowing Hussey to take charge and secure the victory.

Earlier, the Sri Lankans annoyed the hosts by adding 53 runs for their final three wickets.

Dinesh Chandimal (62 not out) batted with authority with the tail, before man-of-the-match Jackson Bird took the final wicket of Nuwan Pradeep to finish with 7-117 for the match.
